Zürich (Day1)

Zürich is a very nice town.

It is not too big and very neat. There are no spectacular new buildings from the 70s which nobody wants to look at anymore. The old buildings have a nice touch of understatement while being spectacular at the same time. (photos follow later)

I doubt I have seen as many banks per square km outside of Frankfurt. The banks here have smaller buildings, but I doubt they have less money ;)

One thing you notice pretty fast is Switzerland being an expensive country. At least when compared to Germany. According to the BicMac index almost 25%.

Well walking along Zrich Bahnhofstr. is not really showing reality ;) Lots of jewels, expensive clothes and banks. (Cartier … , Dolce & Gabana … , Credit Suisse …)

Apropos McDonalds, McD Switzerland has WLAN Accesspoints (for free until 28.02) in all restaurants according to the written advertisement. Unfourtunately I left my Laptop in my room and my Zaurus is at home. Last time I walk around without a WLAN capable device. :(

I expected more snow than back home, but it feels warmer and it has actually less snow than where I came from.

After walking around Zrich all afternoon my feet hurt and I am tired. So no coherent post right now ;)

docs.kde.org love day

http://docs.kde.org/

Last night brought me back to the status of my docs.kde.org rewrite, I had before my harddrive crashed. I can fetch the docs, the “fallback to en” is working. I can produce the chunked HTML version.

Plan for today:

  • frontend
  • support for branches     (done)
  • update instead of total rebuild    (done)

Plan for things to come:

  • PDF creation
  • Search
  • Prefered language/branch Cookies

Your language is not listed on docs.kde.org? You have feature requests? Feel free to leave a comment or write a mail to kde-doc-i18n. I know I said this before and was not able to deliver. I am pretty confident this will change today.

background work

I am working on a nice little CMS just for my needs in the background, since I have some stuff prepared to come to fruition in 2005. Thats one of the reasons this space was very quiet lately.

Here are some rough sketches of the design my little baby will get over the next days and weeks.

Things did not work out as intended

I really have to start a reliable and above all automatic backup regime.

I lost 4 weeks of unsaved work and unread mail 2 weeks ago. I am still recovering from it. What I did wrong you ask? Nothing, beside mkfs.reiserfs /dev/hda3 hda3 being my main partition and hda5 which I wanted to format my playground partition. I know about --rebuild-tree, for the record: It is useless on ReiserFS. I am running on ext3 now.

Since the only thing the stupid DVD burner in my laptop can burn in a reliable way is DVD-RAM, I bought some of those. Figuring out a backup cycle which is O.K. for me. I know enough about backup cycles for companies or entities like that. I am organized different from a company, so I have to cope with my screwed workflow.

This takes a bit, since I wonder if it is better to change my workflow (increase in productivity?) or adjust my backup to what I am used to ;) ATM, I try to adjust my workflow. Would result in saner sleep patterns, too.

KDE Development Day 1

Ok, here we go. I started to look into development several times already. Two recent events made me being more focused this time.

  1. I was asked for the 100th time “What are you doing in the KDE Project?” on a fair (LWCE Frankfurt for the record) and I did not like my normal answer the 100th time. I want to develop and not doing so in a structured manner makes me feel bad.
  2. I fixed a proxy environment variable “bug” in konqueror. It was not reported, so I can not link to a bug number. All I can say about this: I really really liked the feeling.

This will be a series of blog entries about my progress on that path. Would be nice to get help and critics via the comments.

Thats the plan.

So for today I will start collecting documentation. URLs, How-Tos, Tutorials, etc. I have some books on KDE development I plan to dig out.

Any good direct starting points (not “developer.kde.org” I know that one, developer.kde.org/superduperhowto.html would be fine ;) )?
