docs.kde.org rewrite update

I was working on docs.kde.org last weekend and achieved to have a frontend and a working backend now.

For the moment my local playground misses the search and a 404 handler. When this is done, this little script and the masses of docs it produces move to their final home.

For the people loving numbers (me):

  • It takes over 13 hours to rebuild all docs for all supported languages on a AthlonMP 1,3 GHz with 512MB RAM. (only needed once at the start or when the style changes.)
  • The complete documentation for all supported languages takes up 5GB of HDD space.

You can find my playground here. Please be kind to it, since this is hosted on my private line. It can and will go up and down in irregular time intervals. So don’t expect this link to work. And it will go down if I am no longer able to read my e-mail with your comments about it. ;)

    Hi

    Two comments:

    • Why did you choose green as the main-color when KDE’s color-set is mostly blue? Not that I don’t like it, I just wonder

    • You name the latest development HEAD instead of trunk

    • just because the new upcoming CIG allows me to. ;)

    • It is still HEAD in SVN. svn -r HEAD

Hi Physos, Looks great - nice work! I wonder whether the User Guide and FAQ links should point to the HEAD versions, since those get updated more often than other docs? Any thoughts?

Keep up the good work :-)

    Hi, physos,

this is really, really, really nice work!

To be able to point to such a nice, central repository of KDE user documentation is an enormous asset when discussing Linux migrations with enterprise level IT decision makers…

    Cheers & thanks, Kurt

It really really looks nice and promising! All clean and without even using it, it seems like it is very intuitive. But, as Carsten said, do something about that green. Choose another blue-tint for example. As much as I love green as a color itself ;), it doesn’t match with the kde-blue. :)

I like the new look (and the green :) One suggestion… you might consider adding some css overlays to the sidebar, for some nice effect, but its not really important. Awesome work!

    Phil:

I wasn’t too sure about linking to HEAD. I link to the translated versions if available and I doubt they are better in HEAD.

    Kurt:

Wait till you can search it, and even better, till you can download the PDFs ;)

I am glad I can finally get this off my long ToDo.
